Kubernetes cgroup v1 Deprecation: Fix a Kubelet That Won't Start and Migrate Nodes to cgroup v2

You upgrade a node pool to Kubernetes 1.35 or later, the node never goes
Ready
, and
journalctl -u kubelet
shows the kubelet exiting on every restart with a line containing
kubelet is configured to not run on a host using cgroup v1
. Nothing in your manifests changed. What changed is a default: since Kubernetes v1.35 the kubelet setting
failCgroupV1
is
true
, so a node that still boots with cgroup v1 is refused outright. On October 6, 2026 the Kubernetes project published a long explainer on this shift. It is a good sign that the next step is coming: actual removal of cgroup v1 code is tracked in KEP-5573 and is planned for no earlier than v1.38.
